Summary

Quantitative data is useful to understand happenings in the world using mathematical means. Sources of Quantitative data could be from surveys, observations and secondary data. The first research paper I studied used secondary data sources to try and ascertain which companies in the Premier League had been sponsored by a gambling company. Quantitative research is the study of measurement using quantifiable boundaries. This helps researchers to also observe changes in behaviours and trends.

Qualitative research methods try to understand the process and meaning behind certain actions and situations. By using focus groups, surveys and one to one interview’s, a researcher is able to delve deep into a person’s personal views and are then able to draw conclusions from the answers that they receive. While quantitative data can use secondary data to reach a conclusion, Qualitative research produces results which haven’t been uncovered in advance. It also aims to understand what a certain population thinks of a specific research problem. (Course.ccs.neu.edu, 2019)
